Joel Shackleton

Vice President, Business Development / Portfolio Manager CIM

How I arrived at Gold Investment Management

“In 2015, I decided that I wanted a change of pace and switched careers. I went from working daily in a refinery to finance. I decided it was time I do what I was good at rather than what paid the most. I was lucky to start at a major brokerage firm that provided me with the tools and guidance to become a well-rounded, ethical Advisor. My mentor was a client-first Advisor who ingrained in me the importance of putting your clients’ needs above your own. My time spent with the team was one of the single best learning experiences of my life. Working with clients from across the spectrum — from Physicians to Oil & Gas industry workers to Business Owners — I was working intimately with a wide range of challenging clientele.

My experience in the brokerage world had a formative impact on my view of this industry. It became clear to me that the future was with Independents like GIM. A firm with a personality, that supports its staff in their beliefs; a firm that is on the forefront of the industry technologically and communicatively; It’s why I made the jump to GIM.”

Favourite part of the job:

“For me, it is all about building long-term trusted relationships with clients and their families. My favorite part of the job is educating investors and helping them avoid the stress that comes along with money management. Our biggest role is really solving problems for individuals and organizations.”

When I’m Not Working:

“In addition to spending time with my incredible wife, Adrianna, I focus a lot of my time trying to improve myself. As my friends will attest, there’s plenty of room for it. Whether this means meeting new people, golfing, going to the gym, or reading books, I’m always trying to push myself to expand my circle of knowledge. If you are ever in the Edmonton area then drop me a line. I love nothing more than to meet people from all walks of life and I’m always fired up to talk about what we do here at GIM.”
